8th Grade Mixed Media Masks

Mask making and the use of masks is an art form common to cultures the world over. There is evidence (in the cave drawings of Lascaux, France) to suggest that masks were used in prehistoric times.

In class, we discussed the many uses of masks: theater, sports, celebrations, religious ceremonies, disguise and cultural events are all opportunities for mask making and wearing. Many people truly believe or simply just like to pretend that wearing a mask transforms you into another being, animal or personality. This seems to fulfill the common human need to transcend the experiences of “everyday life”.

After studying the masks of Africa, India, Bolivia, Mexico and America, 8th grade students created symmetrical and asymmetrical plan drawings of masks. Students chose their favorite image and used additive sculptural processes and Paper Mache to construct masks of their own design. Color, texture and detail were added using paint, fabric, glitter, gems, beads, yarn and other mixed media. ENJOY!!
