8th Grade Nature Explorations/Intuitive Response

8th grade Patapsco Middle art students viewed selections of the film Rivers and Tides–a masterwork that records contemporary Sculptor Andy Goldsworthy creating his on-site, intuitive environmental sculptures. When Goldsworthy arrives in a natural space, be it a frozen northern tundra, a forest poised on the edge of autumn or the sandy shores of a riverbank, he begins by responding intuitively (by instinct) to the natural materials around him. Using only his hands and teeth as tools, he creates poetic visual statements from nature that are as profound as they are temporary. After studying his work, students walked the grounds of our school using whatever natural material they found to “make marks“, trace lines, create shape, explore visual rhythm and leave their mark on the land. Although time and weather washed away their efforts, we captured some of them on camera for you to enjoy.
